Regulators Ofgem said the maximum price for energy deals in the initial country would be increased to cover the additional costs of suppliers.

Regular gas and electricity customers will often see their bills increase by £139 to £1,277 per year.

The charity has warned that time will hit struggling families, who faced an additional £20-a-week loss from Universal Credit in October.

Pre-paid customers will see a £153 increase from £1,156 to £1309, the regulator said.

Ofgem's chief executive, Jonathan Brearley, told the BBC: "The reason for the highest price increases was the record high energy prices across the board. Not just in gas and electricity but in gasoline and diesel"
