Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto said that a sharp change in the positions of Finns on the issue of joining NATO "is associated with a large-scale change in the security situation." He told about this in an interview with Fontanka.
He stressed that, given its history, Finland has always been "very specific" about security issues and attached great importance to national defense. According to the head of the Finnish department, the change in the attitude of citizens of the country to membership in the North Atlantic Alliance is explained not only by Russia's actions on the territory of Ukraine, but also by the discussion of the possibility of using unconventional weapons conducted around this conflict.
On June 29, NATO leaders at a summit in Brussels officially invited Finland and Sweden to join the alliance. Turkey was the only one of the 30 countries of the bloc that opposed their entry. Later, the parties still managed to come to an agreement.
