At a popular San Francisco beach last weekend, beachgoers caught a glimpse of an unusual si

The movement promoting open carry of firearms is picking up steam across the country after originating in Northern California- perhaps most notably with businesses like Starbucks saying they would allow customers to carry guns if state laws permitted them. In San Francisco, the open carry movement was evident on Baker Beach Saturday, where San Jose resident Robert Montgomery told CBS station KPIX that he wanted to promote the message that it s not just criminals who carry guns. Gun rights activists have achieved some prominent victories recently, starting with a California appeals court overturning San Francisco s ban on handguns in 2008, followed several months later by the Supreme Court casting aside a similar ban in Washington, D.C

But Starbucks - along with other top companies like Wal Mart, Home Depot, Best Buy and Barnes and Noble, according to a Wall Street Journal report $ - are following individual states lead on the issue. A spacecraft from 1978 resurfaced, today 鈥?and then it took our lunch money. This is not a story about time travel, though. It a story about the internet, money, space, and, of course, lunch. And it all true. The story begins in 1978, when we launched a probe deep into space. Almost twenty years la
stanley cup ter, that probe was supposed to shut down. But it didn ;t. It kept right on going and, this summer, it comes back into Earth range, ready to communicate with us again. There just one problem: The old tech that was built to talk with the probe had been replaced

stanley cup the tech privately, and then send the probe out on one last mission. Within 2 hours of this post, with a link to donate, appearing on io9 front page, the number of donors had jumped from 24 donors at $2,000 to 94 donors at $5,000, including from this commenter who chose space over lunch: AdmiralAkbar I didn ;t buy a lunch today so those science bullies got my lunch money. Hopefully it helps. Of course, there still plenty of budgetary and technical hurdles to jump over. We don ;t yet know just how the story will end or what kind of future to expect for this space probe from the past. Like I said before, this isn ;t a st
