The journey of the heroine woman, like all archetypal hero journeys, is a process of individuation. The traveler sets out on an adventure outside her ordinary world to face enemies and dragons. The hero overcomes trials with the help of a mentor, real or supernatural, who prepares him to face the challenges.
Along the way he will encounter decisive tests, some of them life or death. There are also rewards and a way back, which is not without its difficulties. The heroes will encounter their own mermaids who will try their best to make them abandon the path. It is a journey of the human psyche with some stages, real and symbolic, that are not common to all and that go through the separation from the mother and the acceptance of the father among others.
This archetypal journey is about becoming who we really are, transforming the vision we have of the world and ourselves. It is a search for a more transcendent sense of life and a yearning to manifest our own nature. It was mythologist and historian Joseph Campbell who in the mid-20th century popularized the term in his book The Hero with a Thousand Faces.
The heroine's journey: the differencesThe hero's journey, also known as the monomyth, contains patterns valid for both men and women. It is always a difficult journey and for us there is the added bonus of having to undertake it in the context of "a man's world". We women are pushed to search for our own identity in an environment where the feminine is often defined/treated as a dependent, inferior construct and an object of temptation.
These are some of the dragons we must face if we set out on this journey. In many cases, the female heroine unconsciously makes the mistake of facing this adventure taking the masculine as a reference. This is how almost all of us begin it.
There is a first break with the ordinary world whereby the woman seeks her identity through professional success, power and physical "perfection". These values are fundamentally masculine, archetypically linked to the ascending journey of the world of the sun, intellect and power. In short, the world of the father.
This is a significantly destructive stage for the woman and is often the prelude to a dramatic event in her life, such as an illness, a major loss or the breakup of a relationship. This event is a descent into the unfathomable female psyche. It is a critical phase where the heroine feels lost, where she feels she is not in control of anything. She does not find references that can guide her, a feeling that causes her confusion, and sometimes much suffering.
Integrating the feminineThe next phase is one of reencounter with her own feminine nature and the improvement of relationships with other women. In this stage there are usually encounters with wise women for whom the heroine will feel great admiration. New references; new ways, up to that moment hidden.
The rational no longer explains the facts and circumstances in which our heroine woman is involved. Thus begins a stage of encounter with the irrational and the subjective world. The traveler assumes the importance of the cycles of nature and of her own, of her body. She strongly integrates an intuitive interrelation with the elements that surround her.
Happiness and love are two of the concepts that she begins to see from very different points of view. It is a tremendously creative period, with a fertile imagination. There can be a reunion and improvement of the relationship with the mother or with other women who symbolize her. Even when the healing of her relationship with her mother is not possible, a harmonious reunion with her own inner mother, with her own maternal nature, occurs.
Integrating the masculineThe goal of this stage of the journey is the integration of the masculine. The integration of everything learned in the painful first part of the adventure. Sometimes it manifests itself through a change in the difficult relationship with the father or whoever symbolizes him.
A phase of affective relationships opens up in which our heroine does not renounce her own freedom and male figures appear in her life for whom she develops a deep admiration. In short, we are talking about a harmonious integration of feminine and masculine aspects which, when it occurs, often results in some artistic production.
The returnFor women, returning from this descent is also a reconciliation with their own body and sexuality. There is a recognition of the sacredness of the feminine part of every human being. The woman heroine brings all this wisdom with her on the return from her own odyssey. The judgmental inner voice has been left by the wayside. Values as important as success or romantic love have been transformed. The heroine returns with a symbiotic vision of the world we live in and with a strengthened intuition.
It is a journey of descent, dark and full of difficulties to the depths of our own psyche. A journey that we don't always want to go on and that will never find us ready. Have you felt the call yet?
