Today we wanted to bring The Prince of Tides, a film that has been around for a while now, but which unfortunately contemplates an issue that continues to be of concern. Abuse and sexual assault are tremendously traumatic events for those who suffer them. And although there are differences in the way they affect depending on gender, the biggest differences are "produced" by the age of the victims.
When it is minors who suffer an assault or sexual abuse, the problem is aggravated. First, because at that age they have not yet developed the tools that allow them to manage the situation. And second, and almost worse, is that they are not the owners of their lives. The decisions taken in the face of such an event do not depend on them.
Unfortunately, the adults responsible for their protection and well-being often do not know how to deal with this from the perspective of their responsibility to the children.
Many decisions are made based on the priorities, values, beliefs, fears or circumstances that affect those who must make the decision and not on those that affect the child. In a high percentage of cases, the decision is to ignore, cover up, hide the fact from the sight of others and from their own.
It is not even a decision. It is a very harmful defense mechanism for those who take this path and fatal, almost always, for the victim. The prince of the tides tells us about this. Of the horrible silences with which one tries to hide a crime of this caliber; a coping strategy that ends up damaging the children more than the aggression itself.
The Prince of Tides: The StoryThis masterful film was produced and directed by Barbra Streisand in 1991, also playing one of the main characters. Based on the book of the same title, its author, Pat Conroy, gave the book to Mrs. Streisand so that she would be the one to stage it.
Barbra Streisand has always been a woman very committed to social causes and situations of injustice, and she definitely did a magnificent job with The Prince of Tides.
The film tells us about the life of Tom Wingo, who Nick Nolte gives a fantastic portrayal. Tom and his siblings suffer a horrific sexual assault when they were still children. The family situation was already complex. The children grew up in a very dysfunctional environment with a high degree of domestic violence. The situation is further complicated by the attack of strangers who break into the house and rape the children.
Their mother decides to deal with her children's sexual assault by keeping it a secret and forcing the children to act as if it never happened. The three children grow up carrying that secret with them and each has tried to live with it the best way they knew how. But the silence about it has created deep trauma and complicated their lives in a very cruel way.
In the aftermath, Tom must add to the unstable situation of his own failing marriage the repeated suicide attempts of his twin sister.
He travels to New York to help the psychiatrist (Barbra Streisand) who is treating his sister after the latest suicide attempt and to make an effort to shed light on Savannah's dark motives for making repeated attempts on her life, as she has no memory of her childhood.
This brings Tom back to his childhood and to the review of his own rape as a very young child. He starts psychoanalysis sessions with the therapist (who also has her own family conflicts) in order to become his sister's memory.
The silences that do not allow us to move forwardThe Prince of Tides shows us a reaction of the children's mother that, although it is hard to believe, is quite normalized in our society. She probably does nothing more than follow a line of concealment already present in her own life, full of aggression and violence on the part of her husband. The problem is that, in this case, she has extended the silence to the brutal sexual aggression suffered by her children.
Sexual aggression in children is a very harsh reality in their adulthood. Studies carried out in this regard give us an idea of the dimension that these aggressions reach with age.
If, in addition, we add the silence of those who should protect them, the situation becomes much more complicated. Hiding sexual aggressions is not the way to deal with the problem. It is absolutely essential that we begin to accept as a society that neither time nor ignorance can cure this type of trauma. The person who has suffered an aggression of this type needs to work through what has happened to them.
Fortunately, in recent years programs and initiatives have been organized to raise awareness, combat and provide solutions to the outrageous issue of child sexual abuse. But it is as individuals that we must begin to be aware of it and not turn our heads away. Silences on this issue are the worst barrier that can be put in the way of a child's ability to move forward with their life. And that should matter to all of us.
