ไต้หวันไฟเขียวใช้วัคซีนโควิดผลิตเอง นับเป็นก้าวสำคัญในการพัฒนาวัคซีนของเกาะไต้หวัน เบื้องต้นพบว่าสร้างแอนติบอดีไม่น้อยไปกว่าวัคซีนแอสตราเซเนกา
สำนักข่าวรอยเตอร์ รายงาน รัฐบาลไต้หวัน อนุมัติการใช้วัคซีนที่ผลิตเองเป็นกรณีฉุกเฉิน โดยวัคซีนดังกล่าวผลิตโดยบริษัท เมดิเจน วัคซีน ไบโอโลจิกส์ (Medigen Vaccine Biologics) นับเป็นก้าวสำคัญของเกาะไต้หวัน ในการพัฒนาวัคซีนต้านโรคโควิด-19
วัคซีนดังกล่าวได้ผ่านการทดสอบความปลอดภัยเฟส 2 และยังอยู่ระหว่างการทดสอบระดับคลินิก และยังไม่มีการเปิดเผยประสิทธิภาพของวัคซีน แต่ด้านกระทรวงสาธารณสุขไต้หวัน ระบุว่า เบื้องต้นจากการวิจัยพบว่าแอนติบอดีที่ถูกสร้างขึ้นหลังจากฉีดวัคซีนนั้น ไม่ได้น้อยไปกว่าวัคซีนแอสตราเซเนกา
การพัฒนาวัคซีนเองเป็นเป้าหมายหลักของรัฐบาลไต้หวัน ถึงแม้ว่าจะมีการสั่งซื้อวัคซีนจากโมเดอร์นา และ แอสตราเซเนกา รวมถึงวัคซีนจากโครงการโคแวกซ์กว่า 20 ล้านโดสไปก่อนหน้านี้
ด้านกระทรวงสาธารณสุขไต้หวัน ระบุว่า ไม่มีความกังวลเกี่ยวกับวัคซีนดังกล่าวในการทดลองระดับคลินิก ซึ่งแต่ละเดือนบริษัทเมดิเจน ต้องรายงานความปลอดภัยของวัคซีน MVC-COV1901 ซึ่งพัฒนาเพื่อฉีดให้กับประชาชนวัย 20 ปีขึ้นไป โดยจะฉีดวัคซีนสองโดสทิ้งระยะห่างระหว่างโดสแรก 28 วัน โดยวัคซีนที่ผลิตจากการตัดต่อโปรตีน (recombinant protein vaccine) นั้นเป็นการร่วมพัฒนากับสถาบันสุขภาพแห่งชาติสหรัฐฯ
ทั้งนี้ ประชากรไต้หวันราว 20 เปอร์เซ็นต์ ของจำนวนประชากรทั้งหมด 23.5 ล้านคน ได้รับการฉีดวัคซีนอย่างน้อยหนึ่งโดส
