สำนักงานสาธารณสุขของอังกฤษ แถลงว่า พบเชื้อโควิดกลายพันธุ์ ชนิดใหม่ที่มาจากประเทศไทยในอังกฤษ เมื่อวันจันทร์ที่ผ่านมา (24 พ.ค.64) โดยตั้งชื่อให้ว่า VUI-21MAY-02 (C.36.3) VUI เป็นตัวย่อของศัพท์ทางวิชาการว่า Variant Under Investigation หรือ สายพันธุ์ที่อยู่ระหว่างการสอบสวน เชื่อว่าเป็นสายพันธุ์ที่เข้ามาจากต่างประเทศ และพบในประชาชนในอังกฤษแล้ว 109 ราย
สำนักงานสาธารณสุขของอังกฤษ ระบุว่า สายพันธุ์ C.36.3 นี้ ถูกพบครั้งแรกในประเทศไทย ในผู้เดินทางมาจากอียิปต์
อย่างไรก็ตาม ในรายงานระบุว่าขณะนี้ไม่มีหลักฐานที่บ่งชี้ว่า สายพันธุ์นี้ทำให้โรคนี้มีอาการรุนแรงขึ้น หรือ ทำให้วัคซีนที่ใช้การอยู่ลดประสิทธิภาพลง ซึ่งอยู่ระหว่างทำการทดลองในห้องปฏิบัติการ เพื่อทำความเข้าใจกับสายพันธุ์นี้ให้ดียิ่งขึ้น ทั้งนี้สำนักงานสาธารณสุขของอังกฤษ ระบุอีกว่าจะออกติดตามหาผู้ได้รับเชื้อคนอื่น ๆ และตรวจหาเชื้อเฉพาะกลุ่มเพื่อสกัดการระบาดของสายพันธุ์นี้
